Today, identification numbers are widely used. One common way to ensure
that the identification numbers we use are correct, is to append a check
digit to that number. I will be discussing what a check is and one of its
applications- driver's license numbers. I have formulated a coding system
for license numbers that encodes personal data and utilizes a check digit.
Scott E. Clark - The Triangle Peg Game
This game is played by starting with one of the fifteen hole empty and
prodeeding by jumping a peg over an adjacent peg into an adjacent empty
hole. The object is to leave just one peg at the end in a specified hole.
All the jumping must take place in a single straight line. Various solutions
of this puzzle are given and some impossible situations are considered.
Vincent Lucarelli - Examining the Brachistochrone Problem With Maple V
The Problem: Given two points, which are not level and do not lie on the
same vertical line, determine the least time path of a particle falling
under the influence of gravity, without friction from the higher point
to the lower.
A Brief explanation of John Bernoulli's solution to the problem will be
presented. Maple V will will be used to show how other paths compare to
the least time path. Additional problems, including paths with friction
and a "two line" path, will be investigated.
Jason Martin - The Secret Behind the Keebler Cards
This discussion deals with a set of Keebler cards, which contain patterns
of numbers. Using the Keebler cards, you will be able to reveal the secret
number that someone else has selected. I will discuss the mathematics involved
and leave you with a trick that will amaze your friends.
